Karnataka Approves ₹23,000 Crore Semiconductor Projects to Power India’s Chipmaking Ambitions

Bengaluru, May 29, 2025: In a major stride toward making India a global semiconductor hub, the Karnataka Cabinet Sub-Committee on Investment has cleared three substantial projects totaling over ₹23,000 crore. These approvals align with India’s semiconductor mission to reduce import dependency and build a self-reliant electronics manufacturing ecosystem.

Key Projects Cleared Under Karnataka’s Semiconductor Policy

1. Lam Research – Advanced R&D and Silicon Component Manufacturing

  • Total Investment: ₹15,901 crore
  • Location: Karnataka
  • Details: ₹6,790 crore for a semiconductor R&D lab and ₹9,111 crore for silicon component manufacturing
  • Focus: 2nm semiconductor research, tool innovation, and production

2. Applied Materials India – Semiconductor Fabrication R&D Centre

  • Total Investment: ₹4,851 crore
  • Location: Bengaluru
  • Details: India’s first R&D-focused semiconductor fab for next-gen chip and display technologies
  • Employment: Over 1,500 high-skilled jobs expected

3. Bharat Semi Systems – Compound Semiconductor Facility

  • Total Investment: ₹2,342 crore
  • Location: Mysuru
  • Focus: Design and manufacturing of silicon carbide and gallium nitride chips
  • Application: Defense, telecom, automotive and renewable energy

State Government's Vision: Semiconductor Leadership

Speaking on the approvals, Karnataka’s Minister for IT/BT, Priyank Kharge, emphasized that the state is committed to becoming the “Semiconductor Capital of India.” He noted that these projects will generate over 3,500 direct jobs and many more indirect opportunities in the electronics value chain.

“This is a transformative moment. Karnataka is not just welcoming investment, but also leading India’s semiconductor revolution,” said Kharge.

These project clearances come as part of India’s broader semiconductor strategy, with incentives under the Semicon India Programme. This initiative aims to position India among global chip manufacturing leaders while strengthening the electronics manufacturing ecosystem and reducing dependency on imports.
